We’re excited to see you at WordCamp Kuala Lumpur 2017!

Here are some final reminders to ensure you have the best time at the event:

Code of Conduct

WordCamps are nonprofit events, organized by volunteers with financial transparency. All speakers and panelists volunteer their time and labor, and pay their own travel and accommodation costs. This is a community event, and we ask you to strongly adhere the WordCamp Code of Conduct. Basically this means to be kind, inclusive and understanding of others, and follow the GPL!

Tickets

Only those with a valid ticket will be allowed to access the conference. You should be able to see your name on the attendees list if your ticket is confirmed. If you have bought tickets but do not see your name on the list, please email to support@wp.org.my. No walk-in guest will be accepted.

If you see your company name in the attendee list, you need to edit those and update your actual name to be able to check-in.

If you can no longer come, please contact us about donating your ticket to someone else.

Time

Registration opens at 7:45 am on 25th November 2017. T-shirt sizes and global sponsor swag are given on a first-come, first-serve basis. We encourage you to come early. Coffee and sandwiches are provided in the morning. All tracks will start exactly at the time specified on the schedule.

Venue

The venue for this event is Royale Chulan Bukit Bintang. There is another hotel with a similar name in Kuala Lumpur. Read this post for details about the venue and public transport. Be sure to come to the right place!

The Grand Ballroom (Track 1) and Tiara Room (Track 2) is located at second floor. Please access through lifts at the lobby. The hotel security policy require all participants to wear lanyards all the time when accessing the first & second floor rooms.

Parking

Basement parking is available at the hotel for a FLAT rate of RM 8.00.

Breakout sessions

We will have 2 tracks running concurrently. You can attend any session and switch rooms at any time (please try not to be disruptive of sessions). Both Grand Ballroom (Track 1) and Tiara Room (Track 2) are located on the second floor of the hotel.

Lanyard

During registration, you will receive your nametag and lanyard. Please ensure you wear these all the time. Access to lunch and conference sessions will be denied if you lose your lanyard.

BYOD

You can bring your own device if you want to. However the hotel is unable to provide power points and we cannot allow you to use your own power extension cables, for safety reasons. Limited charging stations are available to use. However, laptops are not necessary for sessions.

WiFi

Limited WiFi is available at the conference hall.

WCKL Venue: Royale Chulan Bukit Bintang Hotel

Are you excited for WordCamp KL this Saturday? Be sure to carefully note the location of our venue, the Royale Chulan Bukit Bintang Hotel.

The hotel is located in the Bukit Bintang neighborhood, an area famous for its nightlife. It is on Jalan Bukit Bintang, near the corner of Jalan Pudu.

The closest transit stations are:

  • Imbi, on the Monorail line
  • Bukit Bintang, on the MRT

The MRT stations are not yet appearing on Google Maps (they are newly opened), but the Bukit Bintang MRT station is at the corner of Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail.

Note: There is another hotel, not far from ours, with nearly the same name (“Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur”). This is not our venue.

Please be sure to find Royale Chulan Bukit Bintang.

Panel: Running a WP Dev Agency

Among our many sessions at WordCamp KL, we will feature a speakers panel on the topic of owning and operating a WordPress development agency, or working as a freelance designer/developer in the WordPress economy.

Planned topics include:

  • The challenges of competition in the freelance/agency WP development space
  • Tips for setting up and running an agency, or freelancing, with WordPress
  • Ways to attract and keep new clients, and how to stand out in your field
  • Rates and how to charge for your work
  • Audience questions and ideas!

We want to include as many voices as we can in this discussion, and branch out into popular topics that aren’t listed above. If you work with WordPress, or are interested in starting, please come and join the discussion!

Panel Members:

As the Founder of Brand Chapter Agency, Syafrizal Sharif manages the creation of products and services that meet the needs of clients. Prior to Brand Chapter, Syaf held several IT and communications positions for companies including Nextnation Communication, Ada Vista and Fonterra Brands Malaysia. Professionally, Syaf has developed websites since 2004. Now he manages a team of 2 developers and a designer.

Purnendu Dash is an open source developer by passion. This passion gave him the high to became the founder of WC Marketplace amongst his other ideas. He cares for his customer the most, because most of his ideas have come after having some intense dialogues with them. And he believes in going beyond the technology and providing his customers a practical solution for his or her business. He started working with WordPress in 2008.

Edwin Masripan has been developing websites on WordPress since 2008 via his company Laman7. He had worked in corporate sales, developing new strategies to cut through today’s IT market. Eventually, he went back to his passion: building websites.

Speakers – Round Four

Our schedule is nearly ready to be published – check out these further great speakers at WordCamp KL!

Taleha Khan is a TEDx speaker, software test engineer, and star blogger from Dehli. At The Ohh-So-Me Blog, she pens her views on versatile topics from food, beauty, and lifestyle, to books, DIYs, and technology. Some of her other projects include Delhi Food Walks and RJ with Radio Masala. Taleha was the Panel Keynote Speaker at Delhi’s biggest bloggers meet, organised by Markitiers in 2017, and she was recently a speaker at WordCamp Nashik.

Matthew Knighton has 20 years’ experience in software development, and has been developing product and process in his current business for the past three years. He is interested in making apps people use, education online and making a difference in the world via technology and relationships. His current firm, M R K Development Pty Ltd, implements services that use WordPress, WooCommerce, and other technologies.

David Wang helps busy bloggers and small business owners be awesome with WordPress. He is the Chief Caretaker at ClickWP. Completely self-taught, he loves to tinker with WordPress sites, especially those built with the Genesis theme framework. He has conducted workshops and talks about WordPress and is proud to have been one of the inaugural speakers at WordCamp Malaysia 2010. He is so grateful to WordPress and tries to give back to the community in any way that he can.

Let’s Meet Up This Saturday!

Come meet us to discuss the upcoming WordCamp KL, as well as other WordPress topics that interest our members. It’s a great opportunity to network, learn, and enjoy one another’s company here in Kuala Lumpur!

Our meetup group was started by Sam Suresh in 2016, and currently has over 300 members. Since then, we have met about once every 2-3 months, to discuss WordPress and hear about each other’s projects. We have regular meeting attendance of around 25-30 people, and we welcome newcomers of all WordPress backgrounds.

WordCamp KL is on Saturday 25 November at the Royale Chulan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.

Dasun Edirisinghe hails from Sri Lanka, and is obsessed with WordPress. He started to use WordPress from version 3.1 (2011), and it soon became his hobby, passion, and career. He is the founder of the WordPress Colombo Meetup, Chief Organizer of the first ever WordCamp held in Sri Lanka, WordCamp Colombo, and contributes to the WordPress Sinhala Translation in his spare time. Dasun is Working as Lead Designer and CXO of WordPress development agency CeylonDevs. He loves to read books and explore the hidden things in Sri Lankan history.

Niels Lange is a Happiness Engineer at Automattic. His first contact was with WordPress 2.0 in 2005. After years of abstinence, he rediscovered WordPress 4.0 in 2014. Since then he has been 100% committed to serving clients with custom-built websites, as well as contributing to the global WordPress community. He’s been a translation contributor and a plugin contributor since 2015, and spreading Happiness at Automattic since mid-2017.

Eric Tracz is a Digital Nomad currently living in Kuala Lumpur. Co-Founder and CEO of PeepSo.com, he started his journey with open source over 7 years ago as a simple support guy. After Joomla! he fell in love with WordPress and never left. Eric worked his way up to become CEO of his own company, thanks to countless hours spent in front of a computer doing what he loves.

Varun Sharma is the Founder & CEO of Tech Banker, a WordPress development agency based out of Chandigarh, India – The City Beautiful. His WordPress journey began in 2010 when he started using WordPress for his own organization’s website, and he launched Tech Banker in 2013. Andrew dela Serna is a Happiness Engineer at WordPress.com. Starting out as a blogger, Andrew moved on to designing and developing WordPress sites. He later helped organize the first WordCamp Philippines in 2008, and following WordCamps in 2010 and 2012. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Ateneo de Manila and an Associate’s degree from Pratt Institute. Andrew hails from Davao City and currently leads the local blogging community.

Nadzrul Hanif is the co-founder of Mindtrick, a small Video Production business based in nearby Cyberjaya, and has developed tons of WordPress websites over many years. Hanif is an expert in WooCommerce, and has been using the plugin since before it was acquired by Automattic. Knowing where the future is, he has always been a big believer in WordPress!
